Why Choose the Steel Toe French Press?
Sturdy Design
Made of stainless steel and ready for a tough day’s work, the Steel Toe French Press offers unmatched durability. There are no glass parts, which means it’s perfect for traveling, your daily commute, or outdoor activities like camping. This French press is tough enough to withstand the wear of daily use.
Beautiful & Functional
The Steel Toe French Press is more than just practical—it’s a beauty to behold. Featuring the Rock Falls Coffee Company logo, a clean matte black finish and smooth surface, this French press fits seamlessly into any setting. It’s designed without a handle, making it easy to pack without worrying about extra protruding parts when traveling.
Efficient Functionality
The one-way valve in the Steel Toe French Press is a game-changer—it prevents continuous brewing by allowing the coffee or tea to stop steeping as soon as you press the plunger down. The French press can go from brew vessel to mug, and thanks to its insulated body, you don’t need a handle to avoid touching hot surfaces. This simple yet effective design allows coffee and tea lovers to brew and enjoy without the hassle of a separate serving vessel. Want cream or sugar added? Simply pour into a mug when you are ready- the insulated thermos will keep your drink ready for you without over extracting.
Understanding Your Brew: Key Notes Before You Start
Before diving into brewing with the Steel Toe French Press, let’s cover a few important details.
Water Temperature:
175–180°F: Very steamy water
195°F: Almost boiling water
212°F: Full boiling water
You can purchase an electric kettle from Amazon or local retailers and achieve targeted temperatures. We like gooseneck designs with an auto-shutoff feature and a range of temperature settings.
Flavor Terminology:
Astringent: A dry, unpleasant mouth-feel, like eating an unripe banana.
Bitter: A sharp, dark chocolate-like note that contributes to a balanced brew.
Sour: A grassy or lemony taste, usually the result of under-extraction.
These flavor notes will help you to identify changes you may want to make in your brewing routine. Understanding water temperatures is essential to making the perfect cup with your Steel Toe French Press.
What to Brew: Coffee or Tea?
The versatility of the Steel Toe French Press allows you to brew both coffee and tea with ease. Let’s explore how to make the most of this incredible tool.
Features and How to use the French press
The press has a slip-proof rubber bottom that prevents slippage. Next, the lid has a lockable opening for drinking straight from the cup. This makes the device a French press as well as a to-go thermos.
Once opened, the press reveals a rubber gasket around the plunge rod and a special feature at the screen: a one way valve.
This makes our French press distinctively different from other presses. Once plunged, the coffee stops brewing because of the one-way valve.
The coffee passes from the brew chamber into the holding chamber and cannot extract any longer. This makes for a seamless transition to an on-the-go thermos. When you are ready to take a sip, simply flip the locking tab and push the cover back into the locked position. Enjoy!
Supplies for Brewing hot or cold Coffee with the French Press
To brew a great cup of coffee, here’s what you’ll need:
Fresh, coarse-ground coffee
A kettle for heating water
A timer to track the brew time
A scale for measuring the coffee and water accurately
French Press brewing is known for producing coffee with a full body. The full immersion method extracts more oils and particulates, which gives the coffee thicker consistency and fuller flavor. Without dense filters, more of the coffee’s natural oils and flavonoids make their way into your cup, making it taste richer.
Brewing Instructions for Hot Coffee:
Heat 13.5 oz (400g) of fresh, filtered water until it just begins to boil.
Measure out ¼ cup + 2 tsp (25g) of fresh, coarse-ground coffee and add it to the French Press. Set the timer for 5 minutes, but don’t start it.
Once your water reaches the right temperature (between 195-200 degrees), pour it gently into the press, ensuring all the coffee grounds are fully immersed. Start the timer.
Stir the coffee gently at 1 minute to ensure even extraction.
Place the lid and plunger on top but don’t press yet.
When the timer goes off, press the plunger gently and slowly. Pressing too hard and fast can release bitter flavors.
Pour the coffee into your mug—or drink straight from the press if you like it black!
Modifications:
More coffee: If you want a stronger, bolder, thicker cup, increase the coffee amount, but be mindful that you may have trouble pressing the plunger all the way down if you add too much.
Less coffee: Reduces strength, giving you a lighter cup.
Water temperature: Slightly cooler water (just before boiling) can smooth out the brew, while hotter water extracts bolder flavors but may become too bitter with darker roasts.
Brew time: Longer brew times can result in over-extraction (bitter flavor), while shorter times may leave the coffee too weak or astringent. Experiment to find your perfect time.
Pressing slowly: Pressing slowly prevents bitter flavors and creates a smoother brew.
Brewing Instructions for Cold Brew Coffee:
For a smooth, cold coffee concentrate, follow these guidelines.
½-1 cup (96g) medium coarse-ground coffee, depending on the strength desired.
13-16 oz fresh, cool filtered water
Simply add the grounds into the press, add the water, and place the plunger on top, ensuring the grounds are pushed into the water but don’t completely depress the plunger. Let it steep in the refrigerator for 12 hours. Once the brewing time is up, press the plunger and transfer the concentrate to a separate container. This method creates a concentrated brew that you can dilute to your liking with water, milk, or cream.
Cold Brew Modifications:
Straining: For a cleaner brew, pour the concentrate through a paper filter to remove any remaining fines.

Brewing Tea with the Steel Toe French Press
Yes, the Steel Toe French Press is perfect for tea too! Brew a fresh pot of tea on the go or at home, with the added benefit of being an insulated vessel that keeps your tea hot longer.
Tea Brewing Guidelines:
Green Tea: 175–180°F, 1 tsp per 6 oz, steep for 1–2 minutes.
White Tea: 175–180°F, 2 tsp per 6 oz, steep for 2–3 minutes.
Oolong Tea: 195°F, 1 tsp per 6 oz, steep for 2–3 minutes.
Black Tea: 212°F, 1 tsp per 6 oz, steep for 3–5 minutes.
Pu-erh Tea: 212°F, 1–2 tsp per 6 oz, steep for 30 seconds (can steep multiple times).
Herbal Tea: 212°F, 1–2 tsp per 6 oz, steep for 5–10 minutes.
Rooibos Tea: 212°F, 1–2 tsp per 6 oz, steep for 5–10 minutes.
To brew tea, simply add the appropriate amount of loose-leaf tea to your press. Once your water reaches the desired temperature, pour it over the tea and set your timer according to the type of tea. Thanks to the one-way valve, your tea will stop steeping once you press the plunger.
Tea Brewing Modifications:
Amount of tea: If you want a stronger brew, add more tea leaves. For a lighter brew, reduce the quantity.
Water temperature: Be mindful of the tea type and adjust your water temperature accordingly to avoid over-extraction or bitterness.
